Catching up..

Whew, it's been a while since Brian's posted on here, looks like I have to take the reins on this one to get everyone updated!!

So, Zach is ONE now, very exciting, we had a great little party with friends and Zach thoroughly enjoyed his cake :).

From Zach 2009 September

We've also been to the zoo recently, Zach is definitely much more aware of the animals, he LOVED looking at the rhinos!

From Zach 2009 October

We took a weekend trip to Sedona with our friends from playgroup. It was absolutely beautiful, we saw fall colors in the trees, and just enjoyed being outside for a hike (we all know how much Zach LOVES being outside)

From Sedona 2009 October

Most recently we went to a pumpkin patch with our playgroup, the farm left a little to be desired, but it was fun seeing Zach with all the pumpkins and with his friends!

From Zach 2009 October

So those have been the major events lately. In general Zach news, we are ALMOST done teething!!! Well, at least until he gets his 2 year molars in. He is working on getting in the last first year molar, in this last month he's had FIVE teeth come in, for the most part he's handled it well. This last tooth has been... rough though, I guess he's making up for the relative ease of the 4 prior teeth. We're *hoping* that once this tooth comes in we'll get a nice break and be able to enjoy "happy baby" for a few months before the teething gremlin returns.

What else? Zach's current favorite tv show is the Backyardigans, they have a lot of music, and my baby boy likes to shake his groove thang :). He and Reecey (aka Clarice) are still BFFs, yesterday we actually noticed the "kids" playing together, Zach kept handing her toys to chew on, it would have been really cute, if they weren't his toys! His current passion is planes, every since Grandpa L. taught him the plane noise the child is obsessed, he'll be screaming at the top of his lungs and if he hears a plane outside, silence! He just smiles through his tears and points to the sky, it's really cute. And he makes the plane noise himself now too. His other passion, trees, this is also thanks to Nana and Grandpa L., he LOVES trees, he even says "tree", sometimes it comes out "tee" but still, close enough :). He's not quite walking yet, but he's still cruising up a storm, and he has recently decided to permit Mommy and Daddy to hold his hands while he walks, we call it "practice". He's totally off the purees, has been since right around his bday, he refuses to let me feed him. He's also 99% off of his bottle, using only sippy cups for his milk now, the small exception is when teething, sucking on the bottle seems to soothe him, and when he's been screaming for 3 hours because his mouth hurts, I do tend to relent and let him suck on the damn bottle. That's pretty much it, just being cute and funny, and FUN every day!! Hopefully the next blog post won't be so long in coming, but who knows, we've been busy lately!!

We must be insane...

In case life wasn't busy and hectic enough, we thought we would add to it. We had talked about getting a puppy once Austin got a little older, but put it off because we new we'd be busy enough with Zach. But we'd been on the lookout again recently with Zach's birthday and Christmas coming up.

We had decided on getting a Whippet, since we'd read about their demeanor and how great they are with kinds. Plus, we'd need a nice calm dog to be able to be around Austin (who we've nicknamed Hannibal).

Christine found an ad in the paper for Whippet puppies that were already house broken and crate trained, so we started looking into them. The breeder told us the girl pup was the most calm, so we figured we had a winner.

When we went to check her out, and amid all the chaos of the other 8+ dogs in the house, she stayed laying down and chewing on her rawhide. Perfect! So we came home with her!

She and Zach are already best friends. :)

Welcome to the family Clarice!

First Haircut

Zach had his first haircut a couple of weeks ago. He handled it pretty well, just thought it was weird with someone messing around with his head. :)

From Zach 2009 July pt 2

From Zach 2009 July pt 2

He did start getting fussy a little towards the end, but only because he was strapped down for so long.

Mom thought this would be a good learning experience to see if he would sit still long enough for her to cut his hair or if we should leave it to the professionals. We think we'll leave it to the pros!

Vacation Time! (part 2)

On Sunday we went to the San Diego Zoo. It had been a couple of months since we had been to the Phoenix Zoo, so we were curious to see how much more aware of the animals Zach would be. It turned out he was really interested in all of the animals!

From Zach 2009 July (includes San Diego)

He was pretty excited by the first group of monkies we saw (wonder where he got that from Mommy?). He was watching them jump and play, and he was fascinated when he dropped his sippy cup and one of the monkies came over thinking he dropped food. He was really excited to see the monkey so close-up!

From Zach 2009 July (includes San Diego)

We went through a good part of the zoo checking out some more monkies and gorillas, the hippos, and the pandas before Zach was ready for a nap. So we found a place to chill for a while and had a snack. Usually we go through the zoo without really taking a break, so it was nice to just relax for a while. After Zach woke up and had some lunch, we headed off to check out the polar bears, lions, elephants, etc. He was pretty excited watching the giraffes too. He watched them for a long time. We were at the zoo for several hours, but he was still in a great mood when we were ready to leave.

From Zach 2009 July (includes San Diego)

And he may have gotten a couple of new stuffed animals while we were there.... :)

The next day, our last full day on the road, was Mommy and Daddy's day. We headed up to Temecula to visit some wineries. Unfortunately Christine caught a little of what Zach had before we left and wasn't feeling too hot. So we just hit one winery before heading to the restaurant at Ponte Winery, where we are members of the wine club. We had a pretty good meal, including Zach, who got his first kid's meal ordered for him! Yum, buttered noodles!

From Zach 2009 July (includes San Diego)

Ponte has a nice area around their restaurant with a fountain and some grass, so we thought we'd hang out and let Zach play in the grass some. Turns out he's a little desert baby. He was not a fan of the grass!

From Zach 2009 July (includes San Diego)

Once Christine picked him up though, he was fine.

Unfortunately we had to head back to the real world, so Tuesday morning we headed home. When we left the San Diego area it was 64 degress. By the time we got home it was 114 degrees! We picked up 50 degrees in 6 hours... :P And we wonder why we saw so many Arizona license plates over there!

All in all we had a great time on our first family vacation!

Vacation Time! (part 1)

We, along with half the Valley it seemed, headed to San Diego (actually Coronado) over the 4th of July weekend. We just wanted to get away from the heat for a few days and relax for a bit. We found a great deal at the Hotel del Coronado (which isn't nearly as fancy as the regular price would indicate) so we were able to stay on the beach. Coronado is an island just across from downtown San Diego. Definitely a touristy place, but it was nice being able to walk down the main street and have all kinds of restaurants and shopping available.

The hotel was having their own party on the beach the first night we got there, so after we settled in for a bit and Zach explored the room some we headed down for some free s'mores, music, and Zach's first visit to the beach.

From Zach 2009 July (includes San Diego)

From Zach 2009 July (includes San Diego)

Our first full day we headed up to a Stone Brewing Company. We (ok, I) hoped to take a tour but they were swamped because of the holiday weekend, so I just picked up a shirt and a couple of beers only available at the brewery. When we got back to the hotel we headed down to the beach for the afternoon.

Zach had a great time! He liked playing in the sand of course, and we even managed to keep most of the beach out of his mouth. We took him towards the water, putting him so most of the waves would just barely come up to him. At first he wasn't sure, especially since the water was chilly, but soon he was splashing and having a ton of fun!

From Zach 2009 July (includes San Diego)

I took him out into the water so I was knee-deep or a little more and we watched the waves come in. Every once in a while a big one would splash us both. Pretty soon he was laughing and pointing as they came in!

From Zach 2009 July (includes San Diego)

Our second full day was the 4th. We headed down to the main street in Coronado to check out the 4th of July parade. Since San Diego (and Coronado in particular) is a Navy town, I was looking forward to the Navy band, etc. They had a couple helicopters do a fly over and a few bands play. And the typical parade stuff - waving politicians, classic cars, etc. We had a pretty good time though. Especially when Zach found some puppies to play with! :)

From Zach 2009 July (includes San Diego)

There were fireworks pretty close to our hotel so we were able to watch them from the parking lot. Zach liked watching them, but wasn't so sure about the noise. It didn't bother him too much, but he did watch most of them snuggling on Mommy's shoulder. :)

More next time in part 2...

Wow, am I behind...

So many things to talk about over the last 6 weeks. Quick rundown: Zach was sick with his cold, then teething, then sick again (viral infection causing blisters on the back of his throat), then we went on vacation to San Diego, then Zach's Aunt Jackie came to visit. I'll try to catch up on some of the fun stuff with their own posts without falling too far behind again!

And he's crawling (not just his army crawl) and pulling himself up to stand now. Look out world!

9 months and counting!

From Zach 2009 June

Hard to believe Zach is already 9 months old, where has the time gone?! In just a few short months we'll be celebrating his first birthday! Here are his stats at his 9 month checkup: length: 30.5inches (97%), weight: 22lbs 8.5oz (75%) our little giant! He's firmly in 18 month size clothing, with a sprinkling of 24 month. It's incredible how big he is! We were at swimming lessons today and the lady next to me asked me how old he was since he was bigger than her little boy, I told her and she said, "wow! Mine is 15 months!" AWESOME. I fear for the teenage years with this big boy! Our poor fridge and grocery budget!!

From Zach 2009 June

So what else is Zach up to these days? He has 5 and a half teeth, that sixth one has broken through but no progress besides that, it's just hanging out :). He's gotten a lot more mobile, he now shuffles forward army crawl style mixed in with his rolling he gets into all kinds of stuff! He also wants to stand a lot, he can't quite do it himself yet, but he tries to pull himself up all the time! He's a little chatterbox too, he says "mama", "daddy", and "pup-pup" (for puppy, aka Austin). He's also started waving. He's eating like you'd expect a 22 and a half pound baby to eat! A variety of fruits and veggies, some oatmeal, and some meats. He LOVES his sippy cup which we fill with water right now, and the occasional puff, or cheerio. Next up... dairy, we're going to be trying some yogurt and cheese soon, and the doctor gave us the ok to sprinkle in the occasional table food too, should be fun to see his reactions to all these new things!

Yep, he's feeling better!

From Zach 2009 June

This baby went directly from the highchair to the tub, do not pass Go, do not collect $200. This is by far the biggest mess he's made of himself during a feeding to date. We're not complaining though, it means he's feeling better and he's becoming happy again :).

Saddest little face on the planet :(

From Zach 2009 June

Is this not the saddest, most pathetic little face you have ever seen? Poor kiddo was sick most of this week with a yucky cold he probably picked up from our visit to the Children's Museum last week. He had a runny nose, congested chest, and just overall lethargic, poor thing sounded like Darth Vader for like 3 days every morning when he woke up. He's mostly better now, but it was a rough week for all!

Swimming Lessons!

Zach had his first swimming lessons this past Saturday. Since it's a little toasty here in AZ during the summer, and Zach doesn't handle being hot well, we thought it was in all of our best interests to get him started with getting used to the water. He was lukewarm at first and finished firmly indifferent :). Hopefully he eventually starts to like it!

Finally standing..

Finally, Mr. Spaghetti Legs is showing some interest in standing! We've been trying to get him to stand for essentially months, but every time in the past he just lets his legs go all limp or gets them ready to sit. But recently he has started to actually stand, unfortunately his first motivation to do so was to get to the remote control on the coffee table, typical guy!

And number 5!

We noticed yesterday that Zach has tooth number 5 in now! He wasn't as fussy with this one, hopefully the next few will be a little easier on him.

Proof that Zach and Austin get along

For those of you that know our dog, Austin, you know he's a bit of a.... terror. But here's some proof that Austin likes his new brother. :)

Zach rolling around the loft

This is why he's never going to crawl. What's his motivation? He can get where he wants to go without doing it.

Our happy baby is back!

Zach's right top tooth finally came in! We almost forget how happy he normally is until after a tooth comes in...

Working on number four...

Zach's working on tooth number four. It's kept him from sleeping well the last night or two, and it seemed to affect his appetite today too. Hopefully it breaks through soon, he's been pretty grumpy the last couple of nights!

He's still not showing any interest in crawling. He can roll pretty much wherever he wants to go, so what's the motivation?? One of these days I'll edit some video and post it.

Tomorrow we're headed to the Schnepf Farms Peach Festival and meeting some of Zach's friends. Hope it doesn't get too hot! But to beat the heat, we're starting Zach in swimming lessons in a couple of weeks.

Should be fun!

Catching up again

So I've been slacking and haven't posted in a while...

Zach's still growing like a weed. It's pretty amazing actually. His 12-18 month clothing is starting to get a little small, length-wise at least, so we're about to move him up a size again. I swear we buy him clothes every week to try to keep up!

He's getting mobile, but not by crawling. He's managing to move around by rolling everywhere. He's getting pretty fast at it too! He's even managing to turn himself so he can get to toys (or chase the puppy). We figure that he's not going to be motivated enough to crawl since he can get to where he wants to go without crawling. He'd be just like his mommy! But it could be that he's big enough that it's just going to take more time to build the muscle to lift himself.

In other news.. He's gotten his third tooth in. The one to the right of his front two teeth on top. He decided to go a little outside the box with the order they are coming in.

He's been doing pretty good with his new foods too. He's liking most of his veggies - carrots, sweet potatoes, green beans, peas - but not as much with the fruits. So far just pears and bananas (a little). And one specific brand of applesauce is acceptable. Not that he's picky or anything!

We also had to drop his crib down after he realized was able to reach his mobile. Here's the evidence. Notice the monkey in his hand in the first picture, and the mobile missing its monkey in the second. :)

At the zoo

We're sitting under a tree at the zoo, having a picnic lunch. The weather could not be more perfect. Low 70s, breezy... Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

We had his head examined...

I can't wait to give him all kinds of crap about that when he gets older :). Any-who, Zach had an ultrasound on his head last Friday (the doctor was concerned with his head's rapid growth). And the doctor called Monday to let us know everything was just fine. The fact that he's huge continues to come up, apparently his fontanelle (soft spot) is almost closed so the ultrasound wasn't as easy as it could have been.

In other Zach news, we are STILL awaiting the arrival of the first top tooth, this tooth has been particularly rough for everyone, hopefully once it comes in he'll be back to normal for a little bit, but he's been seriously off schedule since this process started, poor lil guy. Also, Zach's bath time has officially been transitioned to the bathtub, well, mostly. He still gets his bath in his baby tub, so he's supported, but we put it in the big bathtub. He discovered splashing on Sunday, and he does so vigorously, he kicks as hard as he can and makes the biggest splash possible, hilarious, no doubt, but SUPER messy when he's on the bathroom counter :).

In unrelated news, we had a bird almost get in the house yesterday. Those that know me well know I HATE birds, they're nasty creatures. Apparently one found it's way in our dryer vent and made it's way down the tube all the way to the dryer, not in the dryer but as close as it could get. I was walking by the laundry room and heard a commotion and summoned Brian immediately, who dealt with the bird by turning on the dryer, I saw feathers spraying out as I looked out the window, don't worry bird lovers, no harm was done, the bird escaped. Lot of freagin good the dog did on this one, he just sniffed around the dryer and went about his business.

I'll update when something else newsworthy happens ;).

No, hell hath not froze over...

This is Austin Q. Powers, our hostile pup who is nicknamed "Hannibal", LOVING Zach.
From Zach 2009 March

Austin has actually been a super good pup wrt Zach, he comes running in when Zach is upset and "presents" himself to be petted since this immediately calms down little Z. And yes folks, he allows Zach to touch him, we always said Austin loves Zach, but he doesn't like him.. I think he might be coming around to that liking thing!!

A half a year! (by Christine)

From Zach 2009 March

Wow, I can't believe that a half year has gone by so quickly! Zach is continuing to grow like a weed and each day he cracks us up with new behaviors and discoveries :). His latest is scrunching up his nose and snorting at us, it's a multi-purpose action apparently, he does it when he's happy, silly, angry, so I have no idea what he's trying to do, but he is DEFINITELY cracking us up with it.

For those interested in stats, he just visited the Dr. yesterday for his check-up. Our little giant comes in at:
28.5" (97%)
18lbs 15oz (75%)
and now his head has caught up as well 18"(90%).

His head took a big jump in the last couple months so the Dr. wants to get an ultrasound on it just to make sure everything is ok. We're not super worried though, it just seems like he got more proportional, he's a big kid!

He's consistently rolling over from back to tummy, although he HATES the result, not a fan of tummy-time. And he's only managed to roll back over from tummy to back once. He does, in fact, have 2 teeth now, his bottom 2, the latest one snuck in last Tuesday, Zach and I went to lunch with some friends and they told me had "teeth", I said, "no, he has tooth", turns out they were right, it popped through that morning! He's still loving his solids, well, the veggies anyways, he's losing interest in the rice cereal, pretty much giving me a face like I just put poo of some sort in his mouth. And no, mixing veggies in doesn't help, he takes about 2 spoonfuls of mixture and then gets ANGRY when he figures out what I'm up to!

Evidence of teeth:

And the result of rolling:

In other news, I'm off for a week (Microchip is doing a plant shutdown because of the economy), which is great, I love spending time with Zach (and Brian and Austin too :)). Zach and I are trying to take advantage of the weather with some trips to the park and walks during this week.

I'll add pictures to this post soon, still need to get them off the camera!

Zach's first baseball game

Last Sunday we went to Zach's first baseball game, a spring training game in Tempe. We got outfield lawn seats so we could just spread out on a blanket. We thought it would be easier with the stroller and everything too. We had a pretty good time, though it was a little hot. It's hard to believe it was 90 degrees already, especially since I got a text during the game from my sister saying that she was looking at over 6" of snow! :)

From Zach 2008 March

We've been keeping busy with other things for Zach too. The last few weekends we've been making some food for him. We've made a couple of batches of carrots, some sweet potatoes, and butternut squash so far. And we'll have some pears ready today too. He's liked all his veggies so far. :) We're going to start him on some peas this week. If he likes those, we'll make a batch of those next weekend.

Other notes since the last time I posted:
- We thought Zach was going to have a second tooth by now. He was really fussy last Sunday evening, and it looked like his gum was swollen. But it's not here yet.
- We went to the zoo again a couple of weeks ago. Zach didn't get to see the jaguar this time, it was in a spot that was hard to see. He liked being outside and seeing the other animals though!
- Zach met some friends a couple of weeks ago. The organizer of one of the mommy meetup groups that Christine joined had a BBQ. Zach looked like a giant compared to a couple of the kids! Of course he is wearing 12 month clothes already.
- And last but not least, Zach turns 6 months old this week! We can't believe it's been half a year already!

Teeth!

Well, one tooth anyway. :) Zach had been a little more fussy lately since he was getting a little further along with his teething. He had a pretty rough weekend, but Monday afternoon we could feel his first tooth poking through! He's been in a great mood since then, maybe he's making up for his grumpiness.

Zach's Nana and Grandpa (Christine's parents) came for a weekend visit last weekend. We spent most of the time just hanging around the house but we had a good time. They did offer to watch Zach for us one night so that Christine and I could go out. We went out and had a pretty nice dinner. It was a little weird not having Zach along though. We didn't remember going out could be so quiet and uneventful. :)

Zach has been eating his cereal really well and he's been eating carrots for almost a couple of weeks. He seems to really look forward to his food now. We'll have to get him started on some other veggies soon.

Other than that, there hasn't been a lot going on. We'll be making a return trip to the zoo this weekend, it'll be fun to see how much more aware of the animals Zach is this time.

Zach's first sporting event

I was offered tickets to last week's FBR Open through work (a company that we do business with had some tickets that they made available to us). And these weren't just admission tickets. These were from the Greenskeeper package. Free food, free drinks, and maybe most importantly, nicer restrooms than just port-a-potties. The tickets were for Thrusday, which was probably a good thing since it wasn't as crowded and navigating with a stroller was a little easier than it would have been over the weekend.

It was a great to be outside too. It was about 70-75 degrees, just a few clouds, a nice breeze... Definitely better than spending the day working!

Zach was a big hit too, he had his hat on and some green sunglasses (matching his outfit of course - I'm sure it was no accident that Mommy dressed him in green!) and we couldn't go 5 minutes without someone saying how cute he was. Which is true of course. :)

It was kind of fun seeing the golf live, but it's better watching it on TV I think. There's not as much downtime between shots on TV. :) That being said, we'd probably go back if we got tickets like that again!

Four month checkup

Yesterday was Zach's 4-moth checkup. The doctor confirmed that everything is going as it should be. And that Zach is a big kid! He weighed in at 16 pounds, 6.5 ounces (in the 75th percentile) and is 27 1/4 inches (97th(!!) percentile).

Zach didn't enjoy his booster shots one bit, but he was ok last night. A little grumpy this morning, but better than the last time.

A new routine

Christine went back to work a couple of weeks ago (on a slightly reduced schedule), so we've been adjusting to a new routine around here. She goes to work Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and works a normal 8 hours. But on Tuesday and Thursday she works from home in the morning and takes the afternoon off. To help out, we've hired a nanny to come in and take care of Zach from 9-3 when Christine has to go in to the office. When Christine works from home we try to split the duties until the afternoon. Things seem to be working out ok, though Christine really wants me to double my salary somehow so she can quit! :)

Some other random notes...

- Zach has his four month checkup tomorrow. And his next round of shots. Poor guy! :(
- We met Chad and Karen's little boy, Ashton, last week. He just turned 1 month old on Monday. It's hard to believe that Zach was that small not that long ago!
- The Cardinals are Super Bowl?!?!?!
- It's been near 80 degrees here this week. Someone forgot to tell Mother Nature it's only January.
- We're going to the FBR Open with some pretty sweet (and free!) tickets next week thanks to a company that my company does business with.

Hopefully I'll get back into the habit of posting a little more often...

Four Months!

Zach turned four months old today! Time is just flying by!

He's doing really well. He's sleeping so well that he gets more sleep than we do, especially now that Christine is back at work. We can tell a difference almost every week in how he is growing. He becoming a lot more aware of his surroundings and smiles and laughs a lot. He's a really good natured kid. He's playing with a couple of the toys he got for Christmas, but he still has to grow in to most of them. I'm sure he'll be playing with the rest in no time!

2008 In Review

2008 turned out to be a pretty busy year. We thought it might be a little more calm than 2007 was after all of our travel, but we were wrong! :)

In January we found out that Christine was pregnant. That started the work in our old house to start making sure we had room for the upcoming addition to our family. We cleaned out the room Christine used as an office and we used the treadmill in, planning on making it a nursery.

We cleaned a lot of stuff out and went through the rest of the house and had a pretty good sized yard sale. This turned out to be the most expensive yard sale you could imagine! One of the items we had was our old treadmill. The lady that ended up buying it couldn't fit it into her car, but we offered to drive it out to her house. So later that afternoon we drove out to her house. We noticed that there was some new house construction in the area, but the last time we looked at hew houses was during the middle of the housing boom and prices were crazy. We thought we'd stop and take a look just to see what prices were like. We were pretty surprised at how much prices had fallen. Two weeks later we had written an earnest check for a new house!

We had thought we'd look around some before then, so it wasn't completely out of nowhere, but we happened to stumble into the right situation with a spec home at a pretty good price that would be ready in plenty of time for us to get settled before Zach was born. So we had to move quick to get our old house ready to sell as soon as possible. We rented a storage unit and cleaned the house out as much as we could, had the entire interior of the house painted, and did some landscaping work. After a few weeks we were ready to put the For Sale sign up!

We were lucky enough to get the house sold for most of what we were asking for after only 3 weeks. The timing couldn't have worked out any better since they wanted to close about two weeks after we closed on our new house. Thanks to a lot of help from friends and family, we were able to get moved in without too many problems (though there's still a mess in the garage....).

Also during this time, I accepted a new job. I was given the chance to work from home doing some web development and database work while doing some management work that would be similar to what I was doing when I left my job at Lockheed Martin. With Zach on the way, this was a great thing to come along! So now I get to work from home and be around during the day to see what's going on. Sure beats the 1 hour+ commute!

And the biggest news of all, Zach was born September 12th! He was 22 inches long and weighed 8 lbs 3 ounces, even though he was almost 3 weeks early. Christine had to be induced because of her blood pressure being really high, but everyone is healthy and is doing really well. It's amazing how much Zach has grown and changed in just 3 and a half months! We can even tell a difference week to week sometimes. He's been really easy on us too. He's been sleeping through the night for a while now, sometimes as long as 9 hours or more. And he's almost always in a good mood. Unless he's hungry, then watch out! :)

So 2008 was a pretty busy, but great year. We're hoping to have even more fun in 2009!
